India at the Olympics

India's first participation on the Olympics was at 1900 when Norman Pritchard won 2 silver medals. Then he was the only athlete from India.
Dhyan Chad
Then in 1920 India sent a team on the Olympics and ever since India has a participants in the games. Since 1964 India participated also at several Winter Olympics.

One of the biggest achievements at the games was made by India field hockey team which won 11 medals from 12 Olympic games. Form 1928 to 1980 Indian sportsmen was dominant at the men hockey. They had won six gold medals. It is interesting that on their first participation as a team the Indian men hockey team won the gold medal. In that time this team was almost unbeatable. Big part of this glory is because of Dhyan Chand or the hockey wizard as they called him. At this “golden era” India has won 24 matches of 24 played and scored 178 goals.

The Indian Olympic Association was established in 1927. It's main duties are to manage the teams and to collect athletes for the teams. The IOA is also responsible for creating the proper conditions for best training. Although all that history and great achievements in hockey the Olympic background of India is very poor. They have won a total of nine gold medals in all their Olympic history but considering that they are the second most populated country in the whole world, this numbers can not impress. Except the hockey, India has won a bronze medals in wrestling in 1952, in shooting in 1964, weightlifting and tennis.

Today India again has it's big names in Olympics. One of them is Akhil Kumar who's a boxer and in 2008 was only a step away from the medals.
