Delhi

Delhi has a massive historical background. The city was populated 2000 B.C. In the place where Delhi is today are found leftovers of seven different cities from different ages. Today the evidences about the great past of Delhi are a lot.

The reason is very simple - the city was conquered by many rulers through the ages and most of them built and reorganised the city according to their own vision. In 1857 the city came under direct rule of The Crown. In 1911 Delhi became capital of British India. After that in the city was designed new area, for administrative and political needs, called New Delhi. After the independence of India Delhi was declared as official capital of Union of India.

Delhi is situated in the north of India. River Yamuna separates the main city from the suburbs. There were also big lakes in the city but most of them has now dried up. The main city lies within the National Capital territory. It includes nine districts, three towns and 300 villages. The climate in Delhi is subtropical. The summers are long and extremely hot. The monsoon season begin in August and lows down the temperatures but rises up the humidity which make the stay of the tourists a little unpleasant. The annual temperature in Delhi is 25 C.

The culture of the city was influenced by it's long history. Here you can see architectural marvels like Red Fort, India Gate and many others. In the city are widely celebrated holidays like 15 of August (the day of independence) and Gandhi's birthday. Qutub festival is an event during which performers from whole India come in Delhi to dance and play instruments. The street food in India is something that everyone who visit the country have to try. The food in Delhi is known as very delicious and includes chaat, aloo tikki and more. Of course you can find fast food restaurants also because in the last years it became more and more popular in India.

Most popular sports in Delhi are cricket and soccer. The city have several cricket grounds. The Oldest of them is called “Feroz Shah Kotla”. Many sports events are held in Delhi. The 2010 Commonwealth Games were started in Delhi with big opening ceremony.
