Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. The monument stands in front of the Red Fort. Built between 1644 and 1658 it was one of the last known architectural mastepieces of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

Jama Masjid is located in the heart of the old city of Delhi and casts beautiful shadow over the city. The monument is built by 5000 artisans and it was originally called the Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa or known as “mosque commanding view of the world.

The Jama Masjid was finished under the strict watch and supervision of Khan who was the Prime minister of Shah Jahan. The Monument was built on a red sandstone porch. It stands 10 metres from ground level and its extend is 1200 sq metres. Jama have three gates, four towers and two minares. On the eastern side facing the red fort is the main gate, probably used by the emperors. The tower of the Jama Masjid is made from five storeys. Each storey has its own projecting balcony.

Three of the five stores of the Jama Masjid tower are made of red sandstone. The fourth one is made of marble, while the fifth is made of sandstone also. The Jama Masjid is covered with intricate carvings inscribing the holy Koran. The main prayer hall of the Jama Masjid is made up of high cusped arches and marble domes. The cabinet contains a collection of Muhammad's relics - the Koran written on deerskin, a red beard-hair of the prophet, his sandals and his footprints, implanted in a marble block.
