The history of the Indian poetry is very long dating back to the times of Vedic (vedas were types of text that relates to the first millennium).

The Indian literature includes around 24 types of poetry. Most of them are related to different parts of India and languages. All kind of things has influenced on the way of writing. Reading some of the poets we can see typically Persian or even European phrases and expressions. Other poets have been inspired by what they called “mystical experiences”.

Let's consider some of the forms of poetry in India.
“Assamese literature” - it is called after the Assamese language. The first known works on this language are called “Charyapadas” and they were mostly Buddhist song. These writings were very similar to two other languages called Bengali and Oria. These works bear resemblance to Assamese.

Middle Assamese – first of all this period began at the Ahom court where the Assamese language was adopted as court language. The Ahom rulers had the instinct for historical writings so most of the works of this period are chronicles.

Modern Assamese – With the coming of the British the language was declared non official. In 1873 it was reinstated and ever since it is the formal languages in Assam's schools, courts and offices.

The first article in Assamese was a journal called Jonaki. The Jonaki introduced short story written by Laxminath Bezbarua. In 1894 the first Assamese novel was published. It's name was Mirijiyori. Today modern authors which are writing in Assamese are Chandra Hazarika, Navakanta Barua and more.

Bengali poetry – as the Assamese it also has three basic periods of development – the early age, the medieval period and modern period.
Rabindranath Tagore
The first evidences of Bengali poetry are the mystic poems known as Charyacharyavinishchaya. With the founding of the firm of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1920 starts the time of modern Bengali poetry. Today this form of poetry is very popular in India.

The Indian poetry includes many more forms from different states and ends of India and we can say for sure that it is interesting to see how they will develop.
